How to Find the Dollar General Penny List
Have you ever heard of penny shopping? It's a great way to maximize your savings at the store, and Dollar General is one of the best places to do it. What is Penny Shopping at Dollar General? Dollar General Penny Items are items that have clearanced out. This means they have already gone the lowest they are supposed to go (90% off) and are supposed to be removed from the shelves. When the Dollar General employees do not remove the items from the shelves and you find them, they will ring up just 1 penny! The $0.01 is a way to alert the system that these items are being removed from the system. ​ Each week Dollar General, normally a Friday Morning, releases a list nationwide to each store that informs the employees on which items to remove from the shelf, usually to make room for new items. You can find hundreds of items that are on the shelf at your local Dollar General that employees just didn't have the time to remove, you can find this list here every week as soon as it updates. We try to update it weekly but unfortunately sometimes there is not a list.
What are penny items at Dollar General?
Penny items are items that have reached its final leg of discount, normally 90%. These items are specific products that can be anything from seasonal items to household goods. Finding penny items can bring you amazing deals saving you a ton of money but will take a little bit of work. Treating penny shopping like a treasure hunt can save you a lot of money.
When do items normally penny at your local Dollar General?
Normally penny products set or reset at Dollar General stores on Tuesday morning, this is often referred to as penny day. This means MOST penny sales start on a Tuesday. Recently Dollar General had an update to their computer systems and some stores with the new updated systems now penny out on Wednesdays.
How do I find penny items?
Finding penny items is like a scavenger hunt. You will follow the penny lists posted weekly to know what items are on the penny list. Once you find what you think is a penny you will compare the packaging along with the UPC number provided as reference. Once you have confirmed this you can scan your item with your Dollar General app SCANNER for a price check. When you scan your bar code there are a couple of options that may come up on the price of your item; these all will signal that your item is $0.01. Here is what may appear on your DG APP scanner signaling your item is a penny item:

You will then take your item to the checkout.
Can the cashier deny the sale of a penny item? A cashier can honestly refuse the sale of any item. Dollar General Penny Policy states that if a customer finds a penny item that the cashier should sell the item then remove all remaining items from the sales floor if there is any more. If a store employee refuses the sale, you have two options, walk away or politely show them the penny sale policy. This does not need to be world war three. Ask nicely if the policy changed so you know for the future. If they still refuse then move on to the next store. Penny items are supposed to be removed from the shelves by dollar general staff so if it is not, then the store employees are not doing his/her job and removing the penny items from the store shelves. If you alert customer service by calling to complain, this could result into the managers reprimanding the store and the cashiers will be more aware of the task needing to be done resulting in you finding no more penny deals. In this case you have to ask yourself what is more important.

Tips to follow to become a successful penny shopper.
Know what items are eligible for the penny sale. Only certain items will be available for purchase at the penny price, so it's important to familiarize yourself with what these items are. You can typically find a list of items posted in our facebook group with what penny-priced items will be penning that week.
Know dollar general's policy on penny shopping. Dollar General personnel are normally all trained differently. Some can be trained to not care at all about selling penny items and some Dollar General employees get threatened to get in trouble if they sell a penny item. Keep a copy of the Dollar General policy for penny sales with you, this can help you if you run into problems on the sale floor.
